For bottom-mounted and mid-mounted camshafts, cylindrical timing gears are predominantly used for transmitting power from the crankshaft to the camshaft. Typically, only one pair of gears is required; however, if the diameter of the transmission gear is excessively large, an intermediate idler gear can be added to facilitate smoother operation. To ensure smooth meshing and reduce operational noise, helical gears are commonly employed. Chain transmission is frequently utilized in overhead camshaft (OHC) engines but offers lower reliability and durability compared to gear transmission. In high-speed engines, toothed belts have become widely adopted as a replacement for chains due to their advantages of low noise, high reliability, and cost-effectiveness. For double overhead camshaft (DOHC) configurations, the exhaust camshaft is typically driven by the crankshaft via a timing belt or chain, while the intake camshaft is driven by the exhaust camshaft through a metal chain. Modifications To enhance engine performance, some modification shops opt to replace standard camshafts with high-angle camshafts (Hi-CAM). This modification, although relatively straightforward, can lead to suboptimal results or even degrade engine performance if not performed correctly. The primary issue arises from insufficient understanding of the working angles and principles of camshaft lobes by some technicians. A high-angle camshaft features a cam lobe working angle that typically exceeds 280°, compared to the standard 240°. This design extends valve opening duration and increases valve lift, allowing for earlier opening and later closing of the intake and exhaust valves. Consequently, more air enters the cylinder, enhancing power output at medium and high RPMs. For civilian vehicles, it is advisable to select camshafts with a working angle below 278°. Camshafts with angles greater than 278° significantly increase the valve overlap angle, which enhances high-speed performance but compromises low-speed stability. At low RPMs, such camshafts can cause severe idle vibration or stalling due to poor cylinder sealing, rendering the vehicle unsuitable for daily use and suitable only for racing applications.
