What is a supercharger
Let Kyson team introduce you to the turbocharger and its working principle
Turbocharger is a type of air compressor designed to increase the volume of intake air by compressing it before delivery to the engine. It operates by utilizing the kinetic energy of exhaust gases, which drive a turbine located within the turbine housing. This turbine is connected to a coaxial impeller, which in turn compresses the air received from the air filter system and delivers it at an increased pressure into the combustion chamber. As the engine speed rises, both the exhaust gas velocity and the rotational speed of the turbine increase proportionally. Consequently, the impeller compresses a greater volume of air into the cylinder. The resulting increase in air pressure and density enables more fuel to be combusted efficiently. By appropriately increasing the fuel supply and adjusting the engine operating parameters, the overall power output of the engine can be significantly enhanced.

What turbocharging technologies does Cummins have?
1. Turbochargers for natural gas engines
(1) Implementation of high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology to achieve more complete combustion;
In contrast to diesel engines, natural gas engines operate with a fixed fuel-to-air ratio within the combustion chamber, necessitating precise control of air intake. The integration of high-pressure EGR technology ensures stable combustion and significantly reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions. To enable precise regulation of both intake airflow and recirculated exhaust gas flow, Cummins has developed a dual-channel, dual-bypass turbocharger featuring multiple patented innovations. This design effectively meets the performance and combustion consistency requirements specific to natural gas engines.
(2) Continuous enhancement of turbocharger efficiency and performance to reduce operational costs;
As a critical component of the intake system, the efficiency and performance of the turbocharger play a pivotal role in determining key engine performance metrics, including thermal efficiency (fuel consumption), power output, torque characteristics, and transient response. In order to minimize carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, reduce operational expenses for end users, enhance freight capacity, and improve driving comfort, Cummins leverages world-leading aerodynamic design principles to continuously refine and optimize turbocharger performance. These advancements have garnered widespread recognition and acceptance within the natural gas engine market.
(3) Enhancing Resistance to Mechanical and Thermal Loads to Ensure Superior Reliability
Gas engines typically exhibit average exhaust temperatures that are approximately 300 degrees Celsius higher than those of diesel engines. As a result, the reliability of turbochargers—particularly at the turbine end—is subjected to significant challenges under high-temperature thermal load conditions. To address this, Cummins has incorporated specialized high-temperature-resistant materials into the development and manufacturing of engine components. Furthermore, through advanced design optimization, the structural integrity and performance of each turbocharger component have been substantially improved, enabling them to better withstand both mechanical and thermal stresses. These enhancements ensure compliance with the stringent reliability standards required by modern gas engines.

2. Methanol Engine Turbocharger
To address the growing demand for multi-fuel engine capabilities, methanol engines have been adapted for use in specific regions and operational conditions. These engines operate on principles similar to those of natural gas engines. However, methanol fuel exhibits a degree of corrosiveness, which may compromise the reliability of turbocharger components. In response, Cummins Engine Components has developed specialized turbocharger solutions designed specifically for methanol fuel applications, ensuring compliance with the elevated performance and reliability standards required in such environments.
3. Hybrid Engine Turbocharger
Addressing the increasing demand for hybrid powertrains in the commercial vehicle industry, Cummins Engine Components has developed turbocharger solutions specifically engineered for hybrid applications. These turbochargers are designed to withstand the unique operational challenges associated with hybrid power systems, including frequent transitions between electric and internal combustion engine modes, as well as repeated engine shutdowns and restarts. Additionally, they are capable of meeting stringent requirements for effective heat dissipation and resistance to thermal loads. To ensure long-term reliability under these demanding conditions, enhancements have been implemented in key areas such as rotor system cooling, sealing mechanisms, and bearing material selection.
