Therefore, the torque output from the crankshaft to the outside varies periodically, and the crankshaft speed is also unstable. To improve this situation, a flywheel is installed at the rear end of the crankshaft.

The main function of a flywheel is to store energy and inertia outside of the engine's power stroke. A four stroke engine only performs one stroke of work, and the energy for intake, compression, and exhaust comes from the energy stored in the flywheel.

The flywheel has a large moment of inertia. Due to the discontinuous work done by each cylinder of the engine, the engine speed also varies. When the engine speed increases, the kinetic energy of the flywheel increases, storing energy; When the engine speed decreases, the kinetic energy of the flywheel decreases, releasing the energy. In the three strokes of exhaust, intake, and compression, the flywheel releases its stored energy to compensate for the work consumed in these three strokes, thereby preventing the crankshaft speed from decreasing too much.
