The cylinder block constitutes the core structural component of an internal combustion engine, integrating the cylinders and crankcase into a single unit. It functions as the primary mounting base for critical components such as pistons, crankshafts, and various auxiliary parts.

Cooling Mechanisms
To ensure reliable operation of the cylinder surfaces under high-temperature conditions, continuous thermal management of both the cylinders and cylinder heads is essential. Two principal cooling methods are employed in engine design: liquid cooling (commonly referred to as water cooling) and air cooling.

Water cooling is predominantly utilized in modern automotive engines. In such systems, coolant circulates through enclosed channels-known as water jackets-surrounding the cylinders and embedded within the cylinder head. These water jackets are interconnected between the cylinder block and the cylinder head to facilitate uniform heat dissipation.

In contrast, air-cooled engines rely on the incorporation of numerous external fins cast onto the surfaces of the cylinder block and cylinder head. These fins significantly increase the surface area available for heat transfer, thereby enhancing thermal efficiency. Typically, in air-cooled engine configurations, the cylinder block and crankcase are manufactured as separate castings.
