Working Principle
Given that the transmission ratio between the generator and the engine is fixed, the rotational speed of the generator varies in accordance with changes in the engine's rotational speed. During vehicle operation, the engine's rotational speed fluctuates significantly, causing the generator's terminal voltage to vary across a wide range. To ensure stable power supply to electrical devices and effective battery charging, it is essential to maintain a consistent output voltage from the generator. Therefore, regulation of the generator's output voltage is necessary to achieve this stability.
Regulator
1. **Adjustment of Closing Voltage**
Connect a dry cell in series with the battery and ammeter. Start the engine and gradually increase its rotational speed. Observe the ammeter pointer when the regulator contacts close. If the pointer deflects toward the "+" side, it indicates that the closing voltage is too high, and the spring tension should be reduced. Conversely, if the pointer deflects toward the "-" side, it suggests that the closing voltage is too low, requiring an increase in spring tension. Repeat this process until the ammeter pointer remains stable upon contact closure, indicating an appropriate closing voltage.
2. **Adjustment of Voltage Regulation Value**
Connect two dry cells in series with the battery and ammeter. Start the engine and gradually increase its rotational speed. Monitor the ammeter pointer as the voltage regulator becomes active. If the pointer deflects toward the "+" side, it signifies that the voltage regulation value is too high, necessitating a reduction in spring tension. If the pointer deflects toward the "-" side, it implies that the voltage regulation value is too low, requiring an increase in spring tension. Continue adjusting until the ammeter pointer stabilizes during voltage regulation, confirming an appropriate regulation value.
The principle behind this adjustment method is as follows: When a dry cell and battery are connected in series, a potential difference exists between them. The generator produces a specific voltage. If the potentials are unequal, current flows accordingly. A higher potential in the dry cell causes the ammeter pointer to deflect toward the "-" side, while a lower potential results in deflection toward the "+" side. Stability occurs only when the potentials are approximately equal, as indicated by the ammeter pointer remaining stationary.
Usage and Maintenance
During normal operation, the protective cover of the regulator must not be removed unless necessary. Comprehensive inspections and maintenance should be conducted every 200 hours of operation. Key tasks include:
1. Remove the protective cover and inspect the contact surfaces for dirt or burn damage. Clean the surfaces with a clean cloth if dirt is present. If erosion or unevenness compromises contact quality, smooth the surfaces using fine-grade sandpaper (e.g., "00" grade) and clean thoroughly afterward.
2. Verify the secureness of all connections and measure the resistance values of each coil. Replace or repair any damaged components promptly.
3. Test the circuit breaker's closing voltage and reverse current, the voltage regulator's limit voltage, the current regulator's limit current, and the gaps between various contacts. Adjust these parameters as needed to meet technical specifications.
4. After inspection and adjustment, closely monitor the charging current meter during diesel engine startup. If the meter pointer remains in the "-" position at medium or higher engine speeds, it indicates that the current interrupter contacts have not opened properly. Disconnect the grounding switch immediately to prevent damage to the battery, regulator, and charging generator. If the meter pointer remains at "0" after the diesel engine reaches its rated speed, it suggests that adjustments were not performed according to technical requirements. Reinspect and readjust as necessary.
