Rotational speed is a physical quantity defined as the ratio of the number of rotations per unit time. In engineering contexts, it is typically expressed as revolutions per minute (RPM) and serves as a key parameter for characterizing rotational motion. In electrical engineering, precise measurement of motor speeds and driven equipment is essential, often achieved using portable tachometers. Tachometers are instruments designed to measure both rotational speed and linear velocity, with various types available, including mechanical centrifugal and digital electronic models.

In automotive applications, the tachometer is typically mounted on the instrument panel, positioned symmetrically alongside the speedometer and odometer. It operates based on magnetic principles, receiving pulse signals generated by interruptions in the primary current of the ignition coil. These pulses are then converted into displayable engine speed values. As engine speed increases, the frequency of pulses from the ignition coil also increases, resulting in higher displayed RPM values.

Modern vehicles predominantly feature electronic tachometers, which can be either analog pointer-type or digital LCD displays. Internally, these tachometers incorporate digital integrated circuits that process voltage pulses from the ignition coil, driving the pointer movement or digital display. Another type of tachometer derives pulse signals from the alternator, interpreting and displaying the corresponding speed values. However, this method may introduce inaccuracies due to factors such as belt slippage in the alternator drive system.
