Fifty years ago, the Cummins 38L high-horsepower engine was born to deliver greater power, enhanced reliability, and the ability to meet demanding application requirements. From mechanical control platforms to intelligent electronic systems, from the classic K Series K38 to the KTA38 and then to the QSK38-join us in witnessing its powerful legacy spanning half a century.

As Cummins' core high-horsepower platform, the 38L engine is built on a robust architecture, delivering long service life, high load capacity, and exceptional reliability.

Its power output has increased by 337% compared to the first-generation model. Its strength lies not only in power performance but also in continuous iterative upgrades across intake systems, cooling systems, fuel systems, control systems, power cylinder design, and overall machine integration capabilities.

- Construction machinery: 820–1350 horsepower

- Railway locomotives: 660–1350 horsepower

- Marine applications: 800–1600 horsepower

Fuel system evolution: PT → MCRS → XPI capability extended within the platform architecture (PTMCRS)

With a cumulative installed base of 176,999 units, it is capable of operating at altitudes up to 5,500 meters-making it ideal for high-altitude environments.

We consistently deliver dependable power, broad application adaptability, exceptional uptime, and long-term value.

The 38L engines deployed in the Three Gorges Project have accumulated over 18,000 to 22,000 hours of operation, with benchmark units reaching approximately 22,000 hours and some achieving 17,500 hours without major overhaul.

Data shows that Chongqing Cummins' 38L/K38 products have surpassed 50,000 units produced. From an initial annual output of around 12 units to over 2,800 units in recent years, this growth reflects strong market recognition. Today, the 38L engine stands not only as a symbol of China's advancing engineering capabilities but also as a powerful platform for future innovation-delivering higher efficiency, lower emissions, and smarter applications.
