Carter launches dynamic energy transfer solution, claiming it will bring a 'technological leap' to the mining industry

Sep 27, 2024

Caterpillar has launched what it calls an "innovative OEM design solution" to help address one of the most complex issues in the energy transition of the mining industry - energy management. The Cat Dynamic Energy Transfer (DET) system is a completely self-developed system by Caterpillar that can transfer energy to large mining trucks powered by diesel and battery during mining operations.

The system can also charge the machine's battery during operation and improve efficiency at higher speeds when running on slopes, thereby improving operational efficiency and equipment running time. The Cat DET system provides the industry with multiple options to support short-term and long-term sustainable development strategies.

Cat DET provides a technological leap for the mining industry. Our innovation team designed this system to provide immediate benefits for miners who want to reduce operating costs and greenhouse gas emissions, while creating flexibility for future development, "said Denise Johnson, President of Caterpillar Resources Industries Group. What is Cat DET? Cat DET consists of a series of integrated elements, including a power module that converts mine power into energy, an electrified track system that transmits energy, and a machine system that transfers energy to the truck power system. This rail system is a mobile solution that can be customized according to the specific mine layout of customers, including high-speed and curved sections, thereby improving productivity. The connecting arm can be installed on either side of the truck and is suitable for various truck models to meet the specific operational needs of customers. It can also be used on mature or developing mines and can be moved or expanded to maximize mine coverage.

Cat DET will be integrated with the Cat MineStar Command automated transportation solution, combining automation and electrification technologies. Mines will benefit from the integration of electrification and automation. When combined, these technologies will help miners effectively manage energy demand while achieving production goals, "added Marc Cameron, Senior Vice President of Caterpillar.
