The camshaft sensor is a highly significant sensor in electronically fuel - injected vehicles. Its function is more crucial than that of the camshaft sensor in gasoline vehicles. The reason is that in diesel electronic fuel injection systems, the camshaft sensors in some vehicles are related to ignition (fuel injection) timing. The Engine Control Module (ECM) regulates the fuel injection (ignition) timing based on the signals from this sensor. If the camshaft sensor malfunctions, it may lead to issues such as the engine failing to start, a decrease in power, and the opening of the pressure relief valve. Therefore, mechanics must be able to thoroughly troubleshoot the relevant faults of the camshaft position sensor.
When the camshaft sensor malfunctions, it typically triggers the following three fault codes:
1. Fault Code: P0340 - No camshaft signal
2. Fault Code: P0341 - Unreliable camshaft signal
3. Fault Code: P0008 - Only camshaft signal operating mode
Fault code explanation:
Regarding the fault codes related to the camshaft:
1. Most camshaft sensors use Hall effect sensors. When the signal wheel rotates past the sensor, it generates corresponding changes in signal voltage. The ECU uses this signal and compares it with the tooth gap position of the crankshaft sensor to determine the top dead center (compression top dead center or exhaust top dead center) of one cylinder.
2. Under normal circumstances: The adjacent two phase signals should change regularly between high and low levels, that is: 01-01-01 or 10-10-10;
3. Note: Signal waveform, signal voltage threshold, phase relationship;
(1) P0340 - No camshaft signal
Operating conditions: Engine running process, engine starting process
Conditions for setting the DTC:The ECU does not receive the camshaft signal
The valid edge of the phase signal received by the system (there is a signal but does not match the system waveform diagram) is that the signals of two adjacent sampling windows remain unchanged (the state is always 00-00-00 or 11-11-11)
Fault cause:
Incorrect installation position of the signal disc
The camshaft signal is interfered with
The ground wire of the camshaft sensor is open
The camshaft signal line is open or has a ground short circuit
The signal line of the camshaft sensor has a short circuit to the high level
Failure mode: Engine fault light is illuminated
The engine speed and torque are limited or the speed-limited torque is not limited
Cruise and exhaust braking fail;
(2) Fault code P0341 - Camshaft signal unreliable
Operating conditions: Engine running or startup process
Fault setting conditions: The system receives valid edges of the camshaft signal (there is a signal but it does not meet the requirements), and it remains unstable in two adjacent signal sampling windows (status such as 00-10 or 10-11)
Fault cause: Poor contact in the signal circuit, etc.
Failure mode:
Gasoline engine: Through group ignition test ignition in sequence.In the starting condition adjust the knock control method, and use the knock threshold of the designated cylinder for control. Since it is impossible to distinguish control for all cylinders, to avoid risks, take the most sensitive value to control all cylinders (gasoline vehicle);
(3) P0008 Only camshaft signal operation mode
Operating conditions: Engine start or engine running process
Conditions for setting DTC: The engine control unit ECU fails to receive the crankshaft signal
Failure mode: Engine speed and torque are limited or speed is limited while torque is not, cruise and exhaust braking are out of calibration.
