Komatsu's new electric underwater bulldozer is coming

Feb 22, 2025

In the field of underwater engineering, traditional construction methods encounter significant challenges, including complex underwater environments, high operational costs, and potential ecological damage. To address these issues, Komatsu, in collaboration with Asunaro Aoki Construction, has introduced a cutting-edge electric underwater bulldozer, providing an innovative solution.

This new bulldozer is an electric underwater robot jointly developed by Komatsu and Asunaro Aoki Construction. It is capable of operating at depths up to 160 feet (approximately 49 meters). The fully electric design, powered by batteries, minimizes environmental impact while offering efficient material handling capabilities, making it suitable for large-scale projects. According to Caley Clinton, Komatsu's Global Brand Communications and Creative Director, such equipment is critically needed for ecological restoration and climate disaster prevention, underscoring its importance in these areas. The all-electric design not only reduces environmental disruption but also enhances construction efficiency, providing robust support for addressing climate change and ecological restoration efforts.

Operators can remain safely onshore and monitor real-time progress of underwater operations through advanced data mapping and visualization technologies. The antenna on top of the equipment remains above water, ensuring seamless communication with the remote control station. This allows operators to complete tasks accurately without exposing themselves to the hazardous underwater environment.

While the concept model of this amphibious bulldozer was recently showcased at CES in Las Vegas, the design concept is not entirely novel. As early as 1971, Komatsu launched the D155W radio-controlled amphibious bulldozer, selling 36 units globally. Currently, five of these units, owned by Asunaro Aoki Construction, have completed over 1,200 engineering projects in Japan, primarily for post-disaster reconstruction.

Komatsu is currently testing this new equipment and plans to integrate optimal functionalities based on actual needs to launch a new generation of models. In the future, this equipment will be featured as part of the "Future Society Demonstration Projects" at the 2025 Osaka Kansai World Expo in Japan, showcasing its immense potential in underwater engineering.
