The Current Situation and Future Prospects of Russia's Mining Industry

Nov 09, 2025

In the current circumstances, Russia's mining industry is going through a difficult transition period. Experts point out that the situation of Russian mines and mining hydraulic excavators is not optimistic. Previously, Komatsu, Hitachi, and Cat were the main suppliers. Now, equipment operators have to find alternative solutions and try to maximize the service life of these brand equipment. Experts believe that in the context of imposing import restrictions on traditional Western enterprises, the available equipment is extremely limited at present, which poses certain difficulties for enterprises relying on reliable technology.

The head of the "Mining and Processing" sales department of "Tractor Parts Group" LLC (ООО «Трактородеталь Групп»), Andrey Yushev, pointed out: "Currently, many Chinese manufacturers' hydraulic excavators in terms of performance are not inferior to the aforementioned (Western) brands. However, the problem lies in these Chinese equipment have not yet accumulated sufficient practical usage experience, so it cannot be asserted that they can completely replace Western equipment."

The head of the sales department of "MK Kranex" LLC (ООО «МК Кранэкс»), Alexander Belin, also agreed with this view. He stated that the Russian mining and mining equipment market is gradually replacing old hydraulic excavators with equipment from Chinese manufacturers, with brands such as Sany and XCMG being the main ones. Additionally, the expert also pointed out that a large number of Komatsu equipment has entered the Russian market through parallel import channels.

"Timbermach Baikal" LLC (ООО «Тимбермаш Байкал») sales director, Vili Bagautdinov, explained: "China's modern heavy machinery industry has reached the forefront of the world. For instance, Chinese enterprises have accumulated rich experience in manufacturing equipment for brands such as Komatsu, Hitachi, and Caterpillar during their long-term production of equipment for these brands. At the same time, they have attracted professionals from all over the world, thereby developing unique products with independent intellectual property rights."

Taking Sany as an example, he pointed out that this brand has become one of the leading enterprises in the global production and sales of various special mechanical equipment in the past few years. According to his experience, the company's mining excavators have been successfully put into use in Russian mining enterprises over the past five years, demonstrating excellent performance indicators. In terms of the comfort of equipment operators and the safety of operations, Chinese manufacturers not only have corresponding technical solutions but even surpass the Western brands that have exited the Russian market in some areas in terms of technology.

Bagautdinov further added: "Sany has adopted patented fuel filtration technology and software systems, which help improve equipment efficiency, enhance operational performance, and extend equipment lifespan. At the same time, consumers will find that the equipment 'engine cover' is equipped with mature and reliable components from well-known suppliers such as Isuzu, Cummins, Kawasaki, and KYB - the sources of these original parts can be traced."

Requirements for mining excavators

Regarding the requirements for mining excavators, experts have the same view: consumers hope to obtain alternative products that are comparable to Western brand equipment, in terms of configuration, reliability, and maintainability. Andrey Yushev stated that in terms of configuration, Chinese manufacturers have basically reached the level of Western brands; while in terms of reliability, especially for large Chinese brands that focus on mining equipment production, there has been significant progress.

Alexander Belin emphasized: "Consumers expect the equipment to operate continuously without any faults to achieve the highest operational efficiency. Among them, the technical integrity rate (КТГ) is a key indicator, which reflects the ability of the excavator to complete tasks efficiently in high-intensity working environments."

The representative of "Timbermach Baikal" company reminded that mining excavators are used in high-risk work sites, so they must have corresponding certification qualifications. He stated that consumers would focus on the following factors when choosing equipment: the foundation of the equipment's components, the verified usage experience, and the operational performance under actual working conditions.

Bakhogiynov particularly emphasized that establishing a well-developed service network and spare parts warehouse near the equipment's usage location is crucial, as excavators are technically complex devices.

Unmanned mining operations

The application prospects of unmanned or remotely controlled mining excavators are of great interest to consumers. Andrei Yushev believes that this is an inevitable stage of technological development. Autonomous operating equipment is far safer for personnel than manned driving equipment because unmanned equipment does not have the risk of personnel injury.

Alexander Belin evaluated the development of this field: "The application prospects of unmanned and remote control technologies in mining equipment do exist, and related technologies are actively developing. However, in the initial stage, these innovative technologies are more likely to be applied to dump trucks.

As technology continues to improve and experience accumulates, in the future, unmanned systems will gradually be applied to more complex equipment: bulldozers, graders - and then to earthmoving equipment. Mining excavators are used to complete more complex tasks and require more advanced automation and safety systems."

Vil Bakhogiynov confirmed that mining excavators operate in environments with dynamic terrain, and operators need to have superb professional skills to make timely decisions on-site: determining whether materials need to be filled, monitoring the position of the equipment, and mastering the equipment's load during operation.

He emphasized that operators must be able to clearly observe the surrounding environment at any time of the day and in any weather conditions. However, this expert clearly stated that remote control and unmanned control technologies will continue to develop. Once these technologies reach the necessary reliability level, they will be widely applied, which will enhance operational safety and achieve higher and more predictable operational efficiency.

The trend of electrification and the limitations of cable-lift excavators

Regarding the promotion and application of electric excavators, there have been many successful cases in Russia and other countries. A representative from "MK Kranex" company stated that the core consideration when choosing between a hydraulic excavator and an electric one is the cost of fuel/ electricity.

Due to the significant increase and continuous rise in diesel prices in remote areas, while the cost of electricity is relatively stable, electric equipment without an internal combustion engine (ICE) clearly has great potential. This expert cited China's mining joint enterprises as an example, pointing out that the electrification trend is very obvious in these enterprises.

Bakhogiyanov noted: "In Russia and globally, cable-lift excavators are widely used in open-pit mining operations in the upper areas. Under certain conditions, they do indeed have higher efficiency. However, compared to hydraulic excavators, cable-lift excavators have many obvious drawbacks: the need to build infrastructure for power supply, affected by cable voltage loss, the working radius is limited to approximately 350 meters, and in cases where the bucket capacity is similar, the equipment volume and weight are larger."

He also mentioned that Sany provided an alternative solution - electric hydraulic excavator models SY1650E and SY3000E, with bucket capacities of 10 cubic meters and 15 cubic meters respectively. Compared to cable-lift excavators, these electric hydraulic excavators have better mobility, higher operational efficiency, and lower costs. However, due to power connection limitations, their application scope also has certain restrictions.

Market Outlook: Recovery Will Take Time

Recently, the situation in the mining and mining excavator markets has not been optimistic. All experts agree that the sales of mining equipment and excavators declined last year and in the first quarter of this year. Andrei Yushev attributes this to the reduction in mining operations. He states that the current market is in a trough phase and it is difficult to predict how long this downturn will last. However, considering the importance of the mining industry to Russia and the world, this expert cautiously predicts that the market may start to recover from 2027.

Alexander Belin explains that the situation in the mining and mining excavator markets is closely related to the conditions of key industries such as coal and iron ore mining. He adds that the decline in demand and reduction in production activities in these industries directly affect the import and purchase volume of new equipment. Based on the current situation, "МК Кранэкс" company predicts that the import volume of equipment will further decline.

Vil Baigozhinov presented his own viewpoint: "In fact, we have indeed observed a decline in the sales of mining equipment. The reasons for this include the low prices of raw materials in the international market, high logistics costs in Russia, and the appreciation of the ruble. Mining enterprises are going through a difficult adaptation period to cope with the rapidly changing market environment. In this context, long-term planning becomes very difficult. At the same time, most enterprises need to update their equipment inventories because not all enterprises completed equipment updates between 2022 and 2023.

There may also be factors of concern regarding new Chinese brands. The appreciation of the ruble and the reduction in interest rates by the Russian Central Bank will help the market gradually recover. I believe that the process of restoring consumer purchasing power will be relatively slow, and it will take at least until 2027 to complete."

Key Success Factors: Services and Partners

In the current situation, the selection of equipment has become a decision that requires significant responsibility. Adopting a comprehensive approach to equipment maintenance and support has become a crucial factor in reducing downtime and ensuring the stable operation of mines and open-pit mines.

Whether it is electric equipment or remote control systems, the application of new technologies not only requires high-quality equipment but also professional after-sales service support. Therefore, choosing a reliable partner to purchase mining excavators is no less important than the selection of the equipment itself.

Andrey Yushev also emphasized the importance of the responsibility of mining equipment dealers. These dealers not only provide equipment but also need to provide warranty and after-sales maintenance services. He stated that consumers should not only choose Chinese brands but also choose partners with rich experience in Russia - Such partners need to have a professional service team, be able to respond quickly to demands, and work with customers to establish spare parts warehouses.
