Cummins Delivers First Domestically Produced QSK60 Engine, Marking A Significant Leap in Its Full-chain Capabilities in China

This statement by Zhan Li, General Manager of Cummins East Asia Distribution Division, captures the deepest needs of the mining industry. On May 25, 2026, at Cummins' global high-horsepower engine manufacturing base-Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd.-Cummins and XCMG jointly delivered the first domestically produced QSK60 mining engine to a customer in Yimin. Representatives from major OEMs including Beifang Machinery, Sany Heavy Machinery, LiuGong Group, and CHINA CAMC ENGINEERING CO., LTD., as well as numerous mining customers, gathered together, showing strong interest in Cummins' localized mining power production and collaborative development.

 

XCMG Mining Research Institute Director Xiao Yunbo and Cummins Power Systems China Industrial Market General Manager Gao Xiaofeng jointly delivered the first domestically produced QSK60 mining engine to Yimin.

Manufacturing:

Consistent quality and standards, high power output with localized implementation delivering tangible results

The QSK60 is a proven high-horsepower product from Cummins, with extensive application experience in global mining, power generation, and oil & gas fields. This localization effort goes beyond simple relocation of production; it involves deep customization based on "same quality, same standards," tailored specifically to Chinese mining conditions and original equipment manufacturer requirements.

As a key manufacturing base for Cummins' global high-horsepower engines, Chongqing Cummins has made thorough preparations for the QSK60's localization: establishing an independent 60L cylinder block production line and upgrading its V-type engine assembly line. A new 3,000kW test bench has been built, along with the integration of MES systems, AI-based visual inspection, and a quality big data platform. These initiatives have created an integrated manufacturing system covering cylinder block machining, complete engine assembly, factory testing, and quality control, continuously enhancing manufacturing efficiency, quality assurance, and delivery reliability.

At the meeting, Chongqing Cummins Engine Co., Ltd. General Manager Chai Ruimin stated: "Chongqing Cummins is focusing on three core directions-consistent quality and standards, efficient local response, and local manufacturing-to ensure that product performance, quality, and reliability are fully aligned with overseas plants, while significantly improving delivery and service capabilities."

Moreover, homogeneous quality and standards does not mean rigid replication. According to Wang Tao, Chief Engineer of Cummins Power Systems Division China, while adhering to global unified standards, the QSK60 has undergone multiple customized developments tailored to Chinese mining conditions such as high altitude, extreme cold, and heavy-duty uphill operations. This enables the product to maintain Cummins' global quality while better meeting the specific needs of Chinese mines.

Service:

Defining value by "attendance rate"

Producing a high-quality product is just the first step. Mining equipment operates 24/7, and even an hour of downtime can result in losses far exceeding the price difference of the equipment itself. Ensuring "operational availability" is what customers truly value.

At the meeting, Zhao Xinchun, Vice President of Northern Machinery, clearly outlined mining customers' core requirements for equipment: reliability, ease of use, and peace of mind.

Regarding how to ensure equipment never breaks down, Zhan Li, General Manager of Cummins East Asia Distribution Division, provided a detailed introduction to Cummins' three-tier service support system established in China's mining areas:

Level 1: Proactive Prevention.

Leveraging intelligent diagnostic tools and the globally standardized PrevenTech system, we monitor engine operating hours, maintenance cycles, and fault codes in real time. Service resources are already in place before issues occur. "We can proactively plan parts and maintenance, collaborating with original equipment manufacturers to prevent problems before they happen."

Second level: On-site emergency response.

28 service points, over 100 on-site technicians, more than 60 service vehicles-these figures ensure that the nearest support team can reach the site at maximum speed whenever equipment malfunctions. With one central parts distribution hub and 19 regional distribution centers, combined with on-site consignment warehouses, commonly used spare parts are delivered rapidly. More importantly, Cummins has deployed over 40 backup units, enabling immediate replacement in case of major failures to ensure uninterrupted mining operations.

Level Three: Supply Chain Upgrade.

The localization of QSK60 itself represents a leap forward in the service system. It has been revealed that Cummins plans to achieve 100% localization of its core components by 2027, which will further shorten spare parts supply cycles and reduce supply chain risks.
