Cummins' intelligent control system effortlessly handles the challenges of public transit operations.

Aug 14, 2026

In recent years, an increasing number of electric buses have taken to city streets. From frequent starts and stops during peak hours to slippery roads in rain or snow, ensuring stable, efficient, and long-lasting operation requires precise control of the drive system. So what kind of electronic control solution can meet such complex operational demands?

Cummins' ELFA3 V3.2 electronic control system supports bus operations by reducing concerns and enhancing peace of mind across four key dimensions: energy efficiency, safety, protection, and maintenance.

1. Broad Voltage Efficiency with Flexible Adaptability

ELFA3 V3.2 operates within a wide voltage range from 300 to 840 volts, delivering a maximum rated output current of 300 amps (continuous for 30 minutes), with short-term capability up to 550 amps (for 60 seconds). This robust performance easily handles the frequent acceleration and deceleration typical on bus routes, as well as high-power driving scenarios. The solution supports both single-winding and dual-winding motor configurations and offers optional integration of drive control and high-voltage energy management functions, enabling precise matching with diverse powertrain designs and meeting varied application requirements.

2. Maximum Safety, Full Compliance

Public safety is paramount when it comes to buses, making safety standards non-negotiable. Developed according to ISO 26262 ASIL C, ELFA3 V3.2 features overvoltage protection, SPO (safe state) functionality, and active discharge capabilities, along with electrical isolation between low- and high-voltage systems. These design elements effectively protect against transient overvoltages induced by motors, ensuring reliable and safe system operation. Additionally, the product complies with UN-ECE R10 regulations, offering high safety integrity and global market compatibility.

3. Robust Protection, Lightweight Reliability

With IP6K9K and IPX7 protection ratings, ELFA3 V3.2 confidently withstands harsh conditions including rain, snow, and muddy terrain. Built-in EMI filters suppress electromagnetic interference, while its compact, lightweight aluminum housing weighs only 15 kg. This design balances structural strength with flexible vehicle layout, minimizing chassis space usage, simplifying installation, and streamlining maintenance.

4. Smart Maintenance, Efficient Integration

ELFA3 V3.2 features dedicated AC and current cable connectors with foolproof installation design. DC and AC quick-connect terminals include color-coded labels and anti-contact high-voltage protection. It also supports debugging and diagnostics via standardized Vector tools, enabling fast fault detection and low maintenance costs. Based on AUTOSAR architecture, the system facilitates seamless integration and functional updates for original equipment manufacturers.
