Sign up! Jiangnan Shipyard wins the world's largest LNG refueling ship order

Jun 26, 2025

On June 18th, Jiangnan Shipyard and Shanghai International Port (Group) officially signed a contract for the construction of a 20000 cubic meter LNG refueling ship (H2905). This cooperation is a positive response to the country's policy of striving to build a world-class smart port and green port and a deep cooperation between the company and Shanghai International Port Group in the field of new energy shipping.

As the largest port enterprise in China, Shanghai Port Group has the world's largest comprehensive port in terms of container throughput. While maintaining the sustainable and healthy development of the container industry, it is accelerating the construction of a smart, green, technological, and efficient port led by technology. The new LNG refueling ship project will help Shanghai Port Group improve its port supporting service functions, enhance the service level of the international shipping center, and consolidate its leading position in global ports. Further promote the Yangtze River Delta port cluster to become a leading global hub for clean energy shipping.

Jiangnan Shipyard relies on its profound accumulation in the field of shipbuilding, adheres to technological innovation as the driving force, focuses on cutting-edge fields such as green ships, intelligent shipbuilding, and new material applications, and constantly breaks through. The construction of the world's leading LNG refueling ship in Jiangnan this time was designed by Shanghai Shipbuilding Research and Design Institute, integrating various advanced technologies for LNG refueling from around the world. While ensuring safety, efficiency, and environmental protection, it can adapt to the operational needs of major ports around the world, demonstrating the hard verification power of China's high-end equipment manufacturing.

It is understood that the 20000 cubic meter LNG refueling ship is currently one of the largest LNG refueling ships in the world. The latest order marks Jiangnan Shipyard 's return to the C-type tank gas ship field after a two-year hiatus, entering the LNG refueling ship market. According to the construction plan, this vessel is scheduled to be delivered for use in the first half of 2027.

This type of ship is equipped with three double ear C-type tanks, using LNG vapor as fuel and equipped with a variable frequency energy-saving system. Greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by about 25%, NOx emissions meet Tier III requirements, and SOx and PM pollutant emissions are close to zero. Adopting a fully rotating electric propulsion system, equipped with 2 fully rotating thrusters and 1 high-power bow thruster, it can achieve functions such as autonomous berthing and departure, in-situ rotation, and lateral translation of the refueling ship, greatly improving the flexibility of port operations and refueling operations of the refueling ship.

The ship achieves safe and effective management of LNG evaporated gas through a flexible combination of four methods: gas system, tank pressure storage, GCU, and re liquefaction device, ensuring smooth and efficient refueling operations; And equipped with HD compressors, greatly improving the refueling ship's ability to return air and warm up the cabin. Equipped with the latest ship intelligent system, it can achieve functions such as crew safety management, equipment health management, intelligent cargo management, and shore based management, and meet the requirements of the latest Technical Guidelines for Ship Intelligent Monitoring Systems 1.0 issued by the China Maritime Safety Administration. To meet the vibration requirements of CCS VIB1, a ship satellite TV receiving system and a 4G/5G mobile phone signal amplification system is configured to enhance the comfort of the crew.

This signing is a model of collaborative innovation among state-owned enterprises, and a vivid practice of both sides serving national strategies and leading industrial transformation. In the future, both sides will continue to deepen cooperation in the green shipping industry chain, focus on technological breakthroughs to empower industry upgrading, and jointly write a new chapter in the construction of maritime power and beautiful China.

With the increasing number of orders for LNG powered ships, the demand for supporting LNG fuel refueling infrastructure is also continuously increasing. Since the beginning of this year, the number of new LNG refueling ship orders has surged. According to Clarkson's data, there were as many as 14 new LNG refueling ship orders worldwide in the first five months of this year, compared to 16 new ship orders for the entire year of 2024.

Including the latest orders, Clarkson's data shows that Jiangnan Shipyard currently holds a total of 101 orders with a carrying capacity of approximately 9.97 million tons, including 58 LPG ships, 32 container ships, 7 LNG ships, and 4 automobile transport ships. The delivery schedule is scheduled for 2029.
