According to a report by Indian Equipment Network, Gainwell Engineering Private Limited (GEPL) has introduced India's first domestically manufactured room-and-pillar mining equipment solution and delivered it to Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). The report highlights that this development marks a significant milestone for both India's manufacturing sector and the coal mining industry. The newly launched underground mining machinery includes a heading machine (model GCM345) and a feeder breaker (model GFB110), both of which were manufactured at GEPL's state-of-the-art facility in Panagar, West Bengal.

In 2021, Gainwell Engineering secured an intellectual property (IP) license for Room & Pillar mining equipment technology from Caterpillar. In addition to these advanced machines, the comprehensive solution also incorporates globally recognized equipment: Phillips Global Shuttle Cars, RHAM roof bolting machines, and AllenWest power centers. Together, these components form a robust underground mining system that significantly enhances operational efficiency and safety.
India is committed to achieving self-reliance in the energy sector by leveraging a combination of fossil fuels and renewable energy sources to meet the rapidly growing market demand. The Ministry of Coal has set ambitious targets of reaching domestic coal production levels of 1.3 billion metric tons by fiscal year 2026 and 1.51 billion metric tons by fiscal year 2030. Currently, coal accounts for approximately 56% of India's primary commercial energy consumption, with coal-based power generation contributing 72% of the total electricity output.
The "Coal Mine Vision Plan" developed by the Ministry of Coal underscores the ongoing importance of coal within India's energy mix while emphasizing the adoption of environmentally sustainable mining technologies. The depletion of shallow open-pit coal reserves has necessitated a shift towards more sustainable and socially responsible underground mining practices. Continuous mining machines will play a pivotal role in this transition to efficient underground mining solutions.
Coal India Limited has set an ambitious target of producing 100 million metric tons of coal through underground mining projects by 2030. To achieve this goal, Gainwell Engineering plans to implement 140 continuous mining machine projects. The company is well-positioned to fully meet this demand and simultaneously achieve its export objectives.
