The starter electromagnetic switch is a key component of the starter, and the design quality of the electromagnetic switch directly affects the reliability of the starter.

The electromagnetic switch of the starter motor has two functions. Firstly, it connects the main circuit to rotate the starter motor. Secondly, it pushes out the driving gear through the shift fork and meshes with the engine flywheel ring gear. Therefore, it is required that the electromagnetic switch has corresponding suction force, corresponding stroke, and contacts that can reliably cut off large currents. In addition, it is also required to minimize volume and weight as much as possible.

Based on the above characteristics, the contact structure of electromagnetic switches generally adopts a contact form, that is, the moving contact is made into a bridge or disk shape, so as to have a large heat dissipation surface and heat capacity. The magnetic system mostly adopts a spiral tube electromagnetic structure to achieve the requirements of corresponding stroke, corresponding suction force, small volume, and light weight.

The moving iron core of the electromagnetic switch can move smoothly in the brass shaft sleeve equipped with a spiral coil. The pulling rod of the moving iron core is connected through a fork one-way device. Under the action of the return spring, the moving iron core is usually kept in the initial position of non working. When starting, the starter drive gear needs to move forward by about 12-20mm. Therefore, when the electromagnetic switch starts to be attracted, a large magnetic force is required to generate the necessary initial suction force. After being attracted, the air gap decreases and the electromagnetic suction force increases sharply, greatly exceeding the force required to maintain the attracted state. For this purpose, the electromagnetic switch adopts two coils (attraction coil and holding coil). At the beginning, the attraction coil and holding coil jointly generate electromagnetic attraction. When the switch contact is attracted, the attraction coil automatically disengages from the working state, and the holding coil is used alone to maintain the switch in the attracted state. The current of the holding coil is relatively small, and it can be wound with thinner wires. This can not only reduce the volume of the electromagnetic switch, but also achieve reasonable attraction matching.
