The Rimble Digital Construction Process Leads The Technological Revolution in Civil Engineering.

Jan 07, 2025

Breheny is a British family-owned civil engineering company with a 60-year legacy, boasting over 300 professional construction personnel and a robust fleet of more than 20 excavators and dump trucks. The company has executed a wide range of infrastructure projects, including highways, bridges, utilities, and environmental works. Breheny has adopted Trimble's state-of-the-art digital technology across all its construction sites, setting new standards for efficiency and precision.

In a recent large-scale residential development project, the transformative impact of Trimble technology was particularly evident. This project showcased the seamless integration of Trimble® Earthworks grade control platform technology. The excavator team simultaneously worked on constructing a large lake while also handling roadways, sewers, retention ponds, and landscaping.

The combination of Trimble Earthworks, Trimble Business Center (TBC) software, and Trimble WorksManager software forms a comprehensive digital workflow. This integrated system connects personnel, data, and machinery in a cloud-based environment, providing real-time access to critical information and enhancing overall project management.

Daniel Greenwood, Senior Land Surveyor at Breheny, highlighted the indispensable role that Trimble's product suite has played in the company's operations over the past seven years. Trimble technology has been pivotal in enhancing productivity and operational efficiency.

Initially, Breheny introduced only three Trimble Earthworks machine control systems. Within a few months, operators became highly reliant on these systems, finding it difficult to imagine working without them. Concurrently, GNSS slope control technology significantly improved operator efficiency and adaptability. Design plans could be transmitted remotely, allowing operators to focus on executing tasks with precision.
Today, Breheny operates more than 20 Trimble Earthworks machine control systems, integrated into 20-ton Volvo and 8-ton Kubota excavators. This seamless integration has greatly enhanced work efficiency. Operator Lewis Jarmen noted that the Trimble Earthworks system has fostered his ability to work independently and efficiently.
Trimble Business Center (TBC) streamlines various operations, from calculating earthworks volumes and estimating material quantities for bids to preparing construction layout data and creating detailed 3D models. This comprehensive functionality ensures a smooth workflow and underscores the significant contribution of this technology to Breheny's operational success.
Breheny utilizes measurement drones to collect site data, which is then transmitted to TBC. A 3D design suitable for execution by machinery is created and sent from the office to on-site operators via the WorksManager cloud platform. The WorksManager interface clearly displays design information, enabling on-site engineers to access it remotely. This approach minimizes communication gaps and addresses issues related to operator support and training.
Recently, Breheny trialed the new Trimble R780 GNSS receiver with Trimble Siteworks software. This rugged and compact receiver combines durability and ease of use. With tilt compensation and advanced positioning software, it enables precise point capture across the site.
Greenwood also introduced Trimble SiteVision, a user-friendly augmented reality system designed to communicate new designs and changes to on-site staff, conduct inspections, assess productivity, and perform rapid site measurements.
Greenwood concluded, "Trimble's digital construction process has significantly improved the efficiency and accuracy of civil engineering projects. We are eagerly anticipating future technological advancements from Trimble."
