In 2025, Caterpillar will celebrate its 100th anniversary. A century ago, with the vision of changing the world in mind, Holt Manufacturing Company and C.L. Best Tractor Company merged to form Caterpillar Tractor Company. From launching the first crawler tractor to provide traction for combine harvesters in Northern California back then, to now providing unmanned construction machinery, mining equipment and engines that empower the world, Caterpillar has always been at the forefront of promoting innovation and exploring new technologies. Its products and services have helped customers complete numerous infrastructure projects and contributed to the modernization of the world.
As an important part of Caterpillar's strategic layout in China, the Caterpillar Qingzhou Factory has grown from a local enterprise into an international manufacturing base, serving as a model of Caterpillar's dual-brand flexible production. Recently, during the occasion of Caterpillar's centennial exhibition tour, I interviewed Zhang Jianlin, the Senior Director of Manufacturing Operations of Caterpillar's Earthmoving Division, to review the transformation of the factory after integrating into the Caterpillar system, and to look forward to the development blueprint for the next century.
From the Cottage Workshop to Global Base:
The Progressive Development of Qingzhou Factory
In 1958, the predecessor of the Qingzhou Factory - a machinery workshop with only 8 thatched cottages and 22 workers - was established on the banks of the Mi River in Shandong Province. After years of technological accumulation and several ups and downs in the construction machinery market, the factory officially became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Caterpillar in 2008 and was renamed Caterpillar (Qingzhou) Co., Ltd. in 2013. Today, the Caterpillar (Qingzhou) Factory has become one of the important production bases of Caterpillar through the dual-brand flexible production and lean manufacturing system. "The transformation of the Qingzhou Factory is a microcosm of Caterpillar's 'localization and globalization' strategy," Zhang Jianlin recalled. After joining Caterpillar, the factory introduced Caterpillar's leading quality management system, intelligent manufacturing technology and lean production concepts. Its product line expanded from a single loader to multi-category products such as bulldozers, rollers, graders, and wide-body dump trucks, and achieved the coordinated development of the Cat® (Caterpillar) and SEM Machinery brands.

Today, the Qingzhou factory covers an area of 1.1 million square meters and its products are sold to more than 100 countries and regions around the world. From 2018 to 2025, the factory was nominated for the Caterpillar Global "Chairman's Excellence Operations Award" six times and won the award four times. The manufacturing strength is evident.
When asked about the changes brought by the Caterpillar system to the Qingzhou factory, Zhang Jianlin said: "Since 2008, relying on Caterpillar's resources and experience, we have introduced new technologies and continuously improved manufacturing and management levels. We have made efforts in multiple aspects such as new product introduction, management support, and talent development, and successfully introduced the Caterpillar global manufacturing management system into the Qingzhou factory. This laid a solid foundation for its development, and thus we have now achieved a rich product line."

Dual-brand production in the same factory and global layout
A crucial lever for developing emerging markets
Qingzhou enjoys convenient transportation, with well-developed high-speed rail and expressway networks, providing favorable logistics conditions for material input and product output. The manufacturing environment in Qingzhou is excellent, forming a unique supply chain system.
The continuous innovation drive of Caterpillar always stems from customer needs. The Qingzhou factory fully embodies Caterpillar's long-term commitment to customers. The SEM Machinery brand is the only construction machinery complete machine brand under Caterpillar besides the Caterpillar brand. As one of the important product brands under Caterpillar, SEM Machinery products have the characteristics of reliable performance, affordability and ease of use, effectively supporting Caterpillar's enterprise strategy of continuously expanding its product line.

In the interview, Zhang Jianlin stated: "As an important part of the Caterpillar system, the Qingzhou factory has always adhered to the excellent traditions and long-term commitments of Caterpillar, and has followed the common action values followed by all Caterpillar employees worldwide. Focusing on Caterpillar's unique operation and execution model, we jointly concentrate on business development, and create profitable growth for tomorrow based on today's strategic choices."
When asked about the development expectations for the next hundred years, Zhang Jianlin expressed great anticipation: "The Qingzhou factory has become one of Caterpillar's important manufacturing bases globally. The two brands of products it produces not only serve domestic customers but also target the overseas market. Based in China and serving the world. In the future, we will continue to develop along Caterpillar's global business direction. In the manufacturing process, although we already have a relatively high level of manufacturing and capabilities, we will continue to deeply explore lean production and intelligent manufacturing internally to further promote the company's development and enable the enterprise to perform even better in terms of excellent operations."

From the workshop in 1958 to a key part of the global construction machinery industry chain, the growth of Qingzhou Factory has demonstrated the success of Caterpillar's corporate strategy in being fully implemented in China, and has also reflected Caterpillar's outstanding values of standing firm in the industry and riding the waves for a century.
Entering the next 100 years, with a century of accumulation, Caterpillar will take a more determined step to embrace new opportunities and challenges, and help customers build a better and more sustainable world. Standing at the starting point of the new century, we hope that the Qingzhou Factory of Caterpillar will continue to use innovation as an engine, "letting 'Made in China' and Caterpillar's century-old genes shine on the world stage together."
