As Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles made its judgment at the 2026 Partner Conference: The market opportunities for gas vehicles still lie in the gas-rich northern regions, mainly focusing on long-distance/medium-long-distance transportation, coal dedicated lines, and resource distribution segments. The demand for goods is developing towards "high power, low energy consumption and high comfort". Therefore, at the 2026 Partner Conference of Dongfeng Commercial Vehicles, the Dongfeng Tianlong KX King series products equipped with Dongfeng Cummins Z16N gas engine and Endurant AMT attracted much attention with their outstanding power performance, comfort and intelligent upgrade of the whole vehicle.
Similarly, 2026 is also a year of great commemorative significance for Dongfeng Cummins. The company is about to celebrate its 40th anniversary. In this year, the Cummins 16L gas engine, which was launched in Chengdu in December 2025, will be first introduced to two joint ventures, one of which is Dongfeng Cummins. For the majority of truck drivers, the long-awaited Dongfeng Cummins Z16N gas engine has finally arrived in 2026.
So, what does the Z16N engine mean to Dongfeng Cummins and what kind of value will it bring to users? Recently, Commercial Vehicle News Media interviewed Cao Yongjun, the executive vice president of Dongfeng Cummins Engine Co., LTD., Liu Jun, the director of the New Business Development Department and Materials Department, and Lai Haiju, the director of Customer Engineering.
The product matrix in 2026 is more comprehensive
With the introduction of the 16L high-horsepower gas engine, Dongfeng Cummins' product line has become more complete. "In 2025, Dongfeng Cummins will have three new products. One is the newly released Z16N high-horsepower gas engine, and the other two are 2.5 and 3.0 light-duty diesel engines, completing the product line of light-duty engines. "Cao Yongjun said that by now, Dongfeng Cummins has formed a full coverage of engines ranging from 2.5-liter, 3.0-liter, 4.0-liter and 4.5-liter light-duty engines, to 6.2-liter, 6.7-liter and 7.0-liter medium-horsepower products, and then to 8.5-liter and 9-liter, 10-liter, 12-liter, 13-liter, 14-liter, 15-liter and 16-liter large-displacement engines.
Specifically, in terms of gas engine products, from D6.7N, Z15N to Z16N, the continuously increasing horsepower range and high torque have made Dongfeng Cummins more competitive in the gas engine sector. It is not an exaggeration to describe it as having more wings than a tiger.
Let's first take a look at the competitiveness of the Z16N. Known as the "hexagonal Warrior", it has six core advantages: power, efficiency, reliability, intelligence, safety, and protection. In the view of commercial vehicle news media, the most prominent three are power, efficiency, and reliability, which are also the most concerned aspects for gas engine users. The planned maximum power of the Z16N gas engine is 720 horsepower. With a maximum torque of 3,600 Nm, it is equipped with a dedicated turbocharging system for natural gas engines, enhancing acceleration and climbing efficiency by 20%. It is reported that the Z16N gas engine, due to the adoption of a brand-new strong swirl combustion system, high compression ratio combined with deep Miller cycle, and a continuously variable multi-dimensional control variable valve timing system, has further enhanced thermal efficiency. Under cycle conditions, the engine can save 4% of energy. With the addition of the Smart Brain 3.0(CBM3.0) and intelligent accessories, the gas consumption is further optimized by 2%, achieving a comprehensive vehicle gas saving of 6% and significantly reducing operating costs.
Such powerful performance enables Dongfeng Cummins to further implement stratified management based on the segmented demands of the market and users. Cao Yongjun explained that, for instance, users in the northwest and those in the mountainous areas of the southwest have different demands for gas engines. With the Z16N, Dongfeng Cummins, on the premise of a more complete gas product matrix, by more accurately identifying users' applications under different working conditions, their diverse needs can be met. For instance, some users sometimes have to drive extremely long distances and travel through various road conditions such as mountainous areas and steep slopes. The Z16N has a more abundant power and torque reserve, which can relieve such users of their concerns.
The integrated power chain brings greater value
The reason why this can be achieved lies in the deep integration between Dongfeng Cummins and the original equipment manufacturers. In the interview, Mr. Cao, Mr. Liu and Mr. Lai all emphasized this point from different perspectives. Since the Z16N project began, Dongfeng Cummins has been closely linked with the entire vehicle, including joint development, vehicle-engine coordination, precise customization and calibration, thus enabling the Z16N gas engine to perform better on the entire vehicle.
Lai Haiju used the term "micro-carving". As a carving technique known for its meticulousness and fineness in traditional Chinese arts and crafts, it is most appropriate to describe the matching of the Dongfeng Cummins Z16N gas engine with the entire vehicle. Although the Z16N is derived from the shared platform of Cummins 16L gas engines, its performance varies when matched to different vehicles.
As a company with a profound accumulation of development capabilities, a vast user base and advanced manufacturing heritage, Dongfeng Cummins be proficient at accurately identifying customer needs and providing the most suitable products to meet their demands. Although they are the same powertrain, there are differences in the intake system, intercooling system and other components that match the entire vehicle. These differences actually affect the performance of the engine. Lai Haiju said that this requires close cooperation between engine enterprises and original equipment manufacturers to find the best operating point of the engine.
Software calibration also requires meticulous attention to detail. For gas engines, gas combustion is inherently difficult to control. How to achieve smooth control of the integrated gas power chain while reducing gas consumption is a major challenge. For instance, in the collaboration between the Z16N and the Endutant AMT, Dongfeng Cummins has put in a lot of effort and spent a considerable amount of time conducting tests. They have broken down the working conditions into over 20 types and carried out tests on various gears from start-up, acceleration to gear shifting for different working conditions, collecting data for each condition. Then, they have adjusted the engine and transmission to achieve the optimal state of the power chain.
Take gas consumption as an example. Liu Jun said that based on BM3.0 and the intercommunication of the underlying data of the engine and transmission, the Z16N can save 4% of gas on the basis of the engine itself. Through the deep integration of the integrated power chain, the vehicle can save another 2% of gas. Moreover, it will also bring better ride comfort and noise reduction performance of the entire vehicle. And this is precisely one of the major strengths of Dongfeng Cummins: the integration of an integrated power chain.
So we are very confident that in 2026, the Z16N gas engine, when installed on Dongfeng's products, will perform even better, sell better, and create greater value for users. Cao Yongjun told the Commercial Vehicle News reporter.
